About BIOTEHGEN

The association “Microbial Biotechnology Center” (BIOTEHGEN) was founded in 2002 as an NGO in research and development, as part of the University of Agronomical Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Bucharest – the Faculty of Biotechnology. BIOTEHGEN is a NGO association, which provides expertise in R&D, technological transfer and consultancy in the areas of agriculture, biotechnology and environmental protection. The association has developed its' activities aside the University of Agronomical Sciences and Veterinary Medicine from Bucharest, Romania, especially in direct collaboration to the Faculty of Biotechnologies.

The researchers and experts of BIOTEHGEN have been and are involved in national and international research programs and projects (FP 6, FP 7, Leonardo da Vinci EU program and programs financed by World Bank).

BIOTEHGEN has a good experience in managing Agricultural and Biotechnological Projects in Romania, joining researchers from all the Agronomical Universities from Romania (Bucharest, Cluj, Timisoara, Iasi, Sibiu) and from National Agriculture Research Institutes, like NARDI Fundulea. Related to the present proposal' objectives, the researchers groups of BIOTEGEN and their partners have reached important achievements, as follows:
- development of ecological technologies for environmental protection and innovative technologies to obtain high performance biofuels from regenerated raw materials;
- approaches development for the entire production cycle of biodiesel;
- assessments environmental impacts using the methodology "Life Cycle Assessment - LCA");
- studies on the potential of oleaginous plants cultivation for biodiesel production specific to Romania (rapeseed, sunflower, soybean, safflower, camelina)
- studies on the production potential of agricultural crops and the elaboration of technologies to increase seed oil content, as well as sustainability and environmental impact studies for energy crops;
- development of crop production technologies for new species (Asclepias syriaca) of interest for Romania;
- physical, chemical and enzymatic pre-treatment methods for lignocellulosic biomass as renewable energy;
- screening and identification of microbial strains potential producing hydrolytically enzymes used in bioremediation;
- applying molecular biology techniques to microorganisms for enhancing their biosynthesis capacity;
- obtaining, isolation, purification and characterization of different metabolites, enzymes and reserve biopolymers from microbial cultures, plant and animal tissues on the laboratory and also pilot plant scale;
- obtaining of micro- and nano-structured materials applied in durable development;
- analytical methods development, validation and transfer;
- modernising the Agricultural Knowledge and Information System in Romania;
- promoting clean energetically technologies, the production and the usage of biodiesel in ecological and economically favourable conditions for Romania;
- protection's measures and reduction of green-house gases emissions.

The managing director of BIOTEHGEN is Prof. Stefana Jurcoane, PhD., specialist in biotechnology. Prof. Stefana Jurcoane has a good experience in obtaining useful metabolites from fungi, especially in production and characterization of industrial enzymes used in pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass for biofuels (biogas, bioetanol); she have many studies which evaluated the activity of hydrolytically enzymes: amylases, cellulases, xylanases for conversion of lignocellulose to ethanol and lipases (used in biodiesel technologies); she elaborated four patents about enzymes procedures: polyenzymatic product (celulases, xylanases, amylases), lipases; the procedures of the patents are applied in industrial companies; she is involved in establishing of many non-pollution technologies.

Prof. Stefana Jurcoane is the author of 5 books in the field of Biotechnology; she is the coordinator of Treaty of Biotechnology-2 volumes, about 1300 pages which include a big chapters about bioremediation methods, hydrolytical enzymes; she is the Editor of Romanian Biotechnological Letters (ISI rated), an International Journal, the most important in Romania in the field of biotechnology.

In the proposed field, Dr St Jurcoane has been the coordinator of the following projects:
1. World Bank Project: Complex Recovery Technologies for wastes provided from zootechnical Farms for a sustainable Agriculture in Romania, project manager 2005.
2. CEEX P-CD, 11/07.10.2005, Obtaining techniques of lipolitic products through biosynthesis and process of medicinal native plants - manager partner, Romania, National Programme
3. CEEX P-CD, ELECROCHIMAT/2006, Research in electro-chemical synthesis of micro- and nano-structured composite materials applied in durable development - manager partner, Romania, National Programme.
4. CEEX P-CD, ECOTECH/2006, Non-pollution technologies of complete use of wine-making residues in order to obtain high economical products - manager partner, Romania, National Programme.
5. CEEX PNCDII, acronym: BIONITROFEN no. 61-036/2007, Development of a technology to obtain an enzymatic complex for the hidrolysis of lignocellulosic materials used in the biogas production.
